Artist's Comments

My first attempt at doing a proper, full painting in, well, anything, actually :o.

I'm happy with parts, not with others. I'd love some feedback on this one, because I enjoyed doing it.

Edit: Updated with modifications made per critique received. Thanks to =Chanillingus, ~iconographie and ~Rosiebell

Critiques

This is wonderful for a first try. Perspective wise with the fading background and the stars with different variations of intensity, along with the shooting star, it's very visually pleasing to the eye. Based on the rules of 3, the eye follows from the ground to the figure, up the tree and then travels across the page to the shooting star, which takes the eye back to the figure. These things are good, but watch out for flat horizon lines, because they tend to make the eye travel off the page. The only thing I could say is missing is a mid-ground, and I think adding another gently sloping horizon line, behind the figure and tree could really enhance this imagine. I think broadening the tree's branches, making them reach farther out and thinning the branches more could also enhance the solidarity of the lone figure and make the imagine seem even more grand.

Well, kudos for a first digital painting. I'm not brave enough to even attempt.

Critique wise, I'll start with the praises. I love the varying tones used on the stars, it gives the sky a more realistic depth than a uniform tone of white would achieve. And the trail on the shooting star is pretty true to a real one.
You managed to use a gradient well. I'm usually fussy with them, because they're used really ineffectively, but this one adds a hopeful warmth. (Symbolic? I'm going to assume so, anyway.)

As for development, I feel like the tree has potential to branch out a bit more than it does, as branches of that thickness generally seem to thin out to twigs.
The unfocused edge between the figure and the head could possibly be a bit more consistent? I kind of liked it this way, but it might be considered unintentional.

(Sorry if anything didn't make sense. I need to work on critique. And possibly sub myself so I don't need to use the comments feature for it.)

Oh, and the unfocused edge between the sky and the ground almost reminds me of fog, which I quite liked.
I wish I could edit comments where I forget to add things.

Thanks, Rosie. And for the favourite.

I'm going to have an edit of this one and see what I can improve, especially as regards the tree.

The Doctor: Look at these people, these human beings. Consider their potential! From the day they arrive on the planet, blinking, step into the sun, there is more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than- no, hold on. Sorry, that's The Lion King.
